Sciatica

Sciatica:

A common condition that refers to the sciatic nerve being compressed and irritated. There are many causes for this compression. An examination will be done to ensure that Laser therapy is right for you. Our Class 4 laser is equipped with the strongest settings to ensure deep penetration of the laser beam for maximum effectiveness in deeper muscle groups, such as where the sciatic nerve is located.

Sciatica is a painful problem originating in the lower back, then branching out into your buttocks, hips and traveling down your leg. The feeling in your leg can be similar to a bad cramp or may be more excruciating, making sitting or standing unbearable. Sciatica can randomly occur or develop over time, which can make it difficult to diagnose. At CHIRO & LASER Pain Relief Center of St. Augustine, our team is well-versed in treating this condition.

The Symptoms of Sciatica

Below, you can read the more common signs of sciatica. The less common symptoms experienced include an inability to move the foot or bend the knee. Generally, sciatica only occurs on one side of your body.

  • Pain radiating from your lower back to buttock and down the leg
  • Pain in the leg or buttocks that worsens upon sitting
  • Tingling or burning down the leg
  • Numbness, weakness or difficulty moving your leg and foot
  • A continuous pain on one side of the buttocks
  • A shooting pain making it difficult to stand

Please note that there are symptoms that can constitute a medical emergency. These include a progressive weakness in the legs and bladder or bowel changes such as incontinence.

The Cause of Sciatica

If you are suffering from sciatica, the cause is a nerve that is pinched. Most often, the nerve is pinched because of a herniated disc in the spine or a vertebra that has a bone spur. The nerve pain is due to the pressure of the nerve root and the resulting inflammation. Our therapy focuses on addressing both of the causes of pain.

How Our Class IV Laser Therapy Will Help

Our Class IV laser‘s benefits include the reduction of pain and inflammation and the acceleration of your healing. The release of endorphins is enhanced while neuronal impulses are reduced, which makes an impact on your pain levels. The inflammatory factors are diminished, and the lymphatics dilated so that edema can be reduced. Laser therapy increases your blood flow, releases cytokines and stimulates fibroblast activity and the production of collagen.
