Shoulder Pain
Your shoulder is a complex structure that is prone to various types of injury. Some of the most common include frozen shoulder, shoulder separation, shoulder labral tears, and shoulder dislocation. At CHIRO & LASER Pain Relief Center of St. Augustine, we can address these conditions using our advanced Class IV laser.
Frozen Shoulder
Frozen shoulder results in pain, stiffness and a loss of range of motion in the shoulder. It’s also called adhesive capsulitis and is caused by inflammation, scarring, thickening and shrinkage of the capsule around the shoulder joint. It is characterized by pain and stiffness in the shoulder. You may also have discomfort in your upper arm and restricted motion. The pain may worsen in the night.
Shoulder AC Joint Separation
When the ligaments that attach your collarbone to your shoulder blade are injured, a shoulder separation can occur. The AC joint is the affected structure, which is the area where your clavicle meets the highest point in the shoulder blade. The ligaments may stretch with the milder form of this condition or rupture in the more severe form.
The common cause of shoulder AC joint separation is a fall to the shoulder. Cyclists who go over their bike’s handlebars are prone to separated shoulders, as are athletes in contact sports. The symptoms of a separated shoulder include
- A bump on the top of your shoulder
- A limited range of movement in your shoulder
- Shoulder pain
- Swelling or bruising in the shoulder
- Weakness in the arm or shoulder
Shoulder Labral Tears
There is a ring of cartilage that surrounds the base of your shoulder joint. This area is called the glenoid labrum and can become frayed or detached. If the shoulder is weak or injured, a tear may occur. It can also result from extra stress to the bicep muscle, such as falling onto your outstretched hand.
The two types of labral tears include traumatic, which result from a single incident or non-traumatic, which is from muscle weakness. The symptoms of a labral tear include
- A decreased range of motion
- A grinding, popping or catching sensation in the shoulder
- A loss of strength
- A sensation of your shoulder feeling loose
- A vague ache in the shoulder lasting for several hours
- Pain that increases at night
- Pain, particularly with overhead activities
Shoulder Dislocation
The shoulder is the body’s most moveable joint. It’s also easily dislocated because of this reason. When your arm bone pops out of the shoulder socket, it can be a partial or complete dislocation. A partial means that your upper arm bone is partially out of the socket. The complete dislocation means the upper arm bone is completely out of the socket. Both will cause pain and unsteadiness.
A shoulder dislocation can be caused from being hit, falling or breaking your fall. The symptoms include significant upper arm and shoulder pain that increases with movement, spasms and a bump or bulge in the front or back of your shoulder.
